Norton SystemWorks [RUN NORTON UTILITIES FROM CD-ROM -
08/15/2000]

And now for today's tip...

RUN NORTON UTILITIES FROM CD-ROM

When you run into problems booting into Windows, you can run Norton
Utilities DOS-based recovery programs from the CD-ROM distribution
disc, using it as your Emergency Disk. First, however, you must make
sure your PC can boot from your CD-ROM.

At startup, each PC performs a POST (Power-On Self Test), during which
it verifies the operation of various hardware components-- drives,
video adapter, memory, keyboard, and so on--critical to starting your
computer. Your system's CMOS memory chip contains this memory, and you
can access and change it through the BIOS setup routine. That
information includes the boot order of your various drives--floppy,
hard drive, and CD-ROM.

To make sure your CD-ROM is one of the places your PC looks for
boot-up information, you must access its BIOS setup routine. This
varies among systems, but you usually access it by pressing a key such
as F1, Ctrl, or Del while your system is powering up. See your owner's
manual for more details.

Once you're in BIOS setup, you'll likely need to select the advanced
features, which will probably contain your drive information. Make
sure your system will check your CD-ROM and/or floppy drive for boot
information before your hard drive--in other words, check that your
hard drive is third in line.

Look around. If you think you've pressed something you shouldn't, back
out using the Esc key (for most systems) and exit without saving
changes. Then try again.
