Hi Jim and welcome,
I agree that there is some comfort holding stock that you believe will not instantly wake up and have your entire capital wiped away. I believe we have mentioned certain sectors that were worth picking up way back when. I remember mentioning the retail store ANF at 9 bucks last spring. The sector has certainly been on a tear of its own lately as has the oil and gas, more recently going into another opec meeting this month. If you are still "daytrading" either you are not holding shorts over a set period of time, which I admit takes a strong stomach or you are trying to play long techs in a tech bear mkt, impossible to do IMHO. Check out www.sectorwatch.com for some ideas.
The important thing for us here I believe is in maintaining our financial well being by being adaptable and quickly changing course when things evolve. I believe we here have accomplished that to a certain degree better then most and feel that is why this thread is still regarded highly on manys watch list. (Yes we do miss DChapman, but he only keeps us on our guard and that is good for all...)
Check out these two sectors:

and our Oil/Gas Exploration portfolio: finance.yahoo.com
