As for NEC considering "dropping" SGI, this doesn't make sense... NEC makes a lot of money off of selling MTI designs

The source of this rumour is probably rooted in the NCAR deal. NEC won the bid for a bunch of big vector machines to go into NCAR. Cray accused them of dumping and the department of commerce has backed Cray all the way on this (some, particularly NEC, contend that the department's backing is biased). Even though Cray and SGI are now the same, whenever the NCAR dispute generates a press release from SGI, you only see the name Cray mentioned. SGI's walking a tightrope on this one as they don't want to alienate their largest manufacturing partner, but they also really want to get the sale at NCAR.
