Global Crossing adds Peru to fiber optic network

LIMA, Peru, Aug 22 (Reuters) - U.S. telecoms company Global Crossing (NYSE:GX - news) said on Wednesday it had added Peru to its international sub-sea fiber-optic network for high-speed data transmission.

Global Crossing's President for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jose Rios, told a news conference the company had invested $90 million to build the network in Peru. It has destined $2 billion for Latin America.

``From today, Peru is hooking into the most advanced and extensive fiber optic network in the world,'' Rios said.

Global Crossing is one of the world's biggest broadband providers with 160,000 km of sub-sea fibre optic cables in 27 countries which account for 80 percent of the world's data traffic.

The company operates in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Chile, Panama and the Caribbean. Colombia is set to be added next year.
