NEWS: CIRUS looking for big Payoff with USRX Modem Chipset!

Cirrus Logic Pins Rev-Growth Hopes On Modem, Graphics Chips

Dow Jones News Service ~ February 13, 1997 ~ 6:17 pm EST NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Cirrus Logic Inc. (CRUS) President and Chief Executive Mike Hackworth expects strength in modem and graphics chips to spur near-term revenue-growth acceleration at the maker of integrated circuits.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology Symposium here, the executive said Thursday that Cirrus has gained an advantage in introducting Accelerated Graphics Port technology ahead of its competitors, though Hackworth conceded that it appears that Intel Corp.'s (INTC) AGP program ''has slipped some.'' If Intel's microprocessors, the ''brains'' of most personal computers, can't take advantage of AGP, ''it doesn't help to be there,'' cautioned Rajiv Chaudhri, an analyst at Goldman.

AGP technology, which allows for rapid transfer of data between graphics and memory, is expected to hold great potential for sales in the video-game market, Hackworth said.

Cirrus has also licensed U.S. Robotics Corp.'s (USRX) technology for 56-kilobit modems and expects revenue in that area to accelerate rapidly over the next few months as users upgrade from 34 kilobits.
