yes, you should go with a second drive. looks like you had already arrived at that conclusion on your own anyway. <g>

i think the 5400 is probably fine for a secondary drive. the more i ponder it, the more inclined i am to keep the 15gb 5400rpm maxtor i just bought. i doubt that there is anything that i will be doing in which i will ever be able to notice any type of performance hit when compared to the ibm 7200 factory install i am currently running. maybe in defragging speed.

but using one drive partitioned for back ups is not really sound thinking, imo.

i have a lot of learning curve in front of me with these three new powerquest programs and the prospects of installing a second drive. one of my near-term goals is to install win2000 pro on either a partition or on the second drive. and i want to put win95 on a partition too, just for grins. all of this will seriously take time, for me.
