hi ed,

sound advice all. permit me to comment on a couple of the points.

"Check out newsgroups and discussion lists that cover the type of software in questions"

excellent advice! i routinely adhere to this myself. for instance, before upgrading to netscape communicator4.75 not long ago, i visited netscape newsgroups and read through numerous posts to see if there were a high number of complaints from folks who had made the move already. and i just did the same thing with the blackice defender upgrade yesterday... went to the bid message boards and saw an almost complete absence of problems pertaining to the current version. that made me much more comfortable with proceeding with the upgrade.

"Always check the README file (usually named readme.txt) before you install the software"

as you probably know, this isn't always possible. frequently, the readme file is made available to you after the install has taken place and just prior to rebooting or clicking 'finish'. i am always stunned by this incredible flip-flop of sequence. and i see it happen in this order way too many times.

and if i may, i'd like to add one other vital idea on where to look for bugs, fixes and such....

the Computer Learning thread !!!

:)
