SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1998--The CDMA Development Group (CDG) Tuesday announced that 28 cdmaOne wireless local loop (WLL) system trials and commercial contracts have been signed.
A significant increase in cdmaOne WLL contracts were signed in the past six months, with approximately 10 new contracts, including three new countries: Australia, Kuwait and Mexico. In total, 18 countries have now signed cdmaOne WLL contracts, and more than 30 systems are expected to be deployed by year end (see following chart for full country-by-country deployment of cdmaOne WLL).
Tuesday's announcement was made by Perry LaForge, executive director for the CDG, at the Third Annual CDMA World Congress at the Raffles City Centre in the Westin Stamford & Westin Plaza, Singapore. The CDMA World Congress will continue through June 25.
"The current cdmaOne WLL network deployment rate indicates the technology has emerged as the global WLL standard," said LaForge. "Correspondingly, cdmaOne WLL is taking an increasing share of overall cdmaOne contracts. In the instance of Australia, cdmaOne WLL provided the technology's first entry into the continent, and completed cdmaOne's deployment in every major continent.
"With cdmaOne WLL systems just starting to come online, subscriber growth is expected to boom in the second half of 1998. The expected expansion of current cdmaOne systems will assist in achieving economies of scale, making networks even more cost efficient for operators," continued LaForge.
cdmaOne WLL systems offer operators universal access to customers in their coverage area at low cost. With the technology's impressive roll-out time and extraordinary capacity capabilities, cdmaOne WLL offers carriers the best way to pick up new subscribers rapidly.
Customers benefit from unmatched voice quality achieved via 13Kbit and EVRC voicecoders and from value-added features such as wide-area cordless functionality.
The CDG is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of cdmaOne. The 100 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers.
The primary activities of the CDG include development of cdmaOne features and services, public relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs, and international support. Currently there are more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne-related matters.
