So you see no difference between the Soviets under Stalin and later under Kruschev? The fear of Beria's security apparatus was extreme at the time of Stalin, but by Kruschev's time the KGB was no longer as arbitrary in its methods and the mellowing continued until its eventual fall.

When a state is prepared to kill anyone who even questioned authority and demonstrates that will publicly and frequently dissent is at best underground. Before 1989 East Germans revolted with their feet when they could, just as North Koreans do now.

Pretending that the North Koreans could overthrow their regime belies the very nature of the term Police State. And North Korea is doubly unusual because it has maintained its revolutionary fervor at a religious level.

As far as you indictment of European complicity in the Holocoust - its always been convenient to point out the Nazi's and forget the average Germans involvement inb their governments crimes, but while agreeing with you in principle I disagree with the Danish example.

The Danes have no history of anti-Semetism and were accorded a much softer occupation due to their 'Germanic' nature. This does not diminish the Kings magnificent actions, but explains the differences found in France, Poland and elsewhere.

These countries had intense histrories of anti-semetic behaviour and were much more 'actively' occupied. There were thugs for the Gestapo to hire locally.
