I dont have first hand experience with it. But a retired relative is paying for his private insurance instead of relying on the military. He said it was not worth the struggle.

I dont have any problem myself with my present insurance provided by my employer. But we are self insured. I have the lowest co premium and maximum deductible. But overall our plans are designed so employees cover 25% of the total expenses.
