Roxio's iPod --

Samsung announced today that it is going to partner with Roxio to build an obvious competitor for the iPod, branded with the words "Napster Compatible". (Anyone remember "Intel inside"?) This is a canny marketing ploy, as anyone looking at players will recognize the Napster name and feel confident that the player is compatible with a leading name.

The launch of the Samsung memory-loaded portable playback device will coincide with the Napster launch before Christmas. I have high respect for Samsung's ability to design a quality memory/playback unit -- I just hope they don't pull one of those Asian blunders with utterly confusing instrumentation and controls.

ROXI popped right back up to $9.50 on the news. Roxio also used the opportunity to point out its licensing rights from the five major record labels (two of which have ties to it).

Assuming Samsung can get a quality product to market, which is I think a pretty good assumption, Napster should have a good position in the P2P market, in time for holiday buying. Looking very strong at this point, IMO.
