Boston Technology and Unwired Planet First to Demonstrate Wireless Unified Messaging at PCS '97
Demonstration to Show Visual Access to a Unified Mailbox via the Internet Using a Handheld Smartphone
DALLAS, Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Technology, Inc., (NYSE:BSN), a global provider of voice and Internet messaging systems to network-based telecommunications providers, and Unwired Planet, Inc. today announced they will demonstrate a new wireless messaging application utilizing Unwired Planet(TM) wireless Internet access technology for smartphones and Boston Technology's AccessWEB(TM) Internet Messaging Application. At the PCS '97 exhibition in Dallas this week, the two companies will demonstrate how consumers can use their mobile smartphone to visually check all of their voice mail, fax messages and e-mail messages through their unified mailbox.
With a wireless smartphone, Unwired Planet's UP.Browser(TM) provides the visual interface to Boston Technology's Unified Mailbox, through the Internet, via Boston Technology's AccessWEB Internet Messaging Application. In addition to checking all of their messages -- regardless of type -- subscribers also will be able to configure profile settings, access an automated message depositor callback, print faxes and receive new message notification.
Message management options will allow users to listen to messages, save and listen later, auto-reply or call-back immediately, or in the case of a fax or e-mail print to the nearest fax machine. In addition, user profile settings will be easier to manage with the ability to turn on/off and set features such as message notification options, messaging group lists, etc. Subscribers benefit by gaining real-time, detailed information about each message in their mailbox before deciding how to handle the message.
The Next Generation in Unified Messaging
This demonstration reinforces Boston Technology's leadership role as a messaging platform vendor supporting innovations in the new wireless handsets and enhances the company's Unified Messaging solution.
``We are very excited about this new wireless technology, and anticipate that our initial work with Unwired Planet, and collaboration with the key vendors that support their technology, will allow our wireless network operator customers to deploy new messaging services in an increasingly competitive environment,'' said Francis E. Girard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boston Technology.
``The combination of Unwired Planet's UP.Link(TM) Platform and Boston Technology's AccessWEB application creates a powerful and flexible solution for network operators who want to deploy advanced unified messaging services,'' said Alain Rossmann, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Unwired Planet. ``As operators move beyond the basic voice service, we believe that Web-based unified messaging will be a key differentiator.''
Stewart Hampton, Senior Business Development Manager also stated that, ``The AccessWEB interface is based on HDML which is being standardized by key handset vendors in the industry. This approach is confirmed by the efforts underway to define a common Wireless Application Protocol. Ultimately this cooperation will benefit Boston Technology's customers, as it will mean a more and varied choice in mobile messaging options.
New Enhancements to Boston Technology's Unified Messaging Solution
Boston Technology's Unified Messaging solution provides a single network- based access point from which to manage all information and message types, using a variety of access devices.
Boston Technology further broadens the scope of its Unified Messaging solution by demonstrating speech recognition technology including voice activated dialing, voice activated voice mail and text-to-speech translation of e-mail messages. Enhancements to the AccessWEB application that will be demonstrated include text-to-fax printing of e-mail messages from a handset or computer terminal.
