InnovaCom becomes major player in DVD revolution
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. (March 24) ENTERTAINMENT WIRE -March 24, 1997-- InnovaCom, Inc., (OTC/BB:MPEG) is introducing a new DVD authoring system for the movie industry which will create virtually an infinite number of previously unavailable options for use in feature film material including multi-track story lines, background information, and language and sound variations.
In effect, it provides a vast new market for "blending" heretofore unused film and tape footage into the end product.
InnovaCom is currently developing the compression technology to convert or "squeeze" large amounts of video and audio information into the new DVD format, using its planned single chip MPEG-2 integrated circuit encoding capability. It will establish a production facility near Hollywood and will license the DVD authoring technology to feature film producers, directors, editors and their companies.
"We have the know-how to provide film production personnel with the authoring tools necessary to tailor their movies to fit the 'multiple thread' format into their movie scenarios," said Mark C. Koz, InnovaCom president.
"It is not inconceivable that the Academy Awards of the near future will factor in DVD multiple threads and endings," Koz suggested. "This establishes another significant bridge between the entertainment industry and the technology that is emerging from Silicon Valley. Clearly it is where the film industry will be going," he added.
Kelvin Klusendorf, founder and chairman of the openDVD Consortium, a technical forum that addresses the issues of implementing DVD and whose members consist of DVD engineering professionals from such companies as IBM, Apple, Intel, Compaq, Microsoft and Time Warner, said: "Building from its years of engineering experience in MPEG technology, InnovaCom will bring the essential DVD authoring tools and compliant environments for DVD title development to the motion picture industry." "BRANCHING" CAPABILITIES
Koz added: "It has always been the case that too much film footage from the shooting of a movie ends up on the cutting room floor as unused content -- all part of the process of fine tuning the plot of the film. DVD has a 'branching' capability that allows multiple endings, even multiple plots. To capitalize on this situation, it will be necessary to plan the shooting and to cut the film in new and interesting ways. In effect, it will be 'The Age of DVD.' This is where InnovaCom enters the picture with its DVD encoding capability and technical depth to put this technology to work.
The DVD authoring system will be released at the Comdex Fall Conference in Las Vegas in November.
InnovaCom has one of the largest groups of engineers in the world dedicated solely to the development of the MPEG-2 technology at its plant in Santa Clara. "Our goal is to open our technology to all interested parties and provide the solutions they need," Koz said.
