Dear Droog,

Thanks for pointing out that we have not updated our home page to include the latest information concerning 56K technology. You correctly point out that millions of individual 56K modems are being shipped and are "in use" today. Ascend Corp controls over 75% of all of the modems shipped to service provider's like EarthLink. Interestingly, they are almost the exclusive supplier to PSiNet and are the exclusive provider to UUNET Technologies. These two organizations are the largest wholesale provider's of dial tone IP traffic in our industry.

Ascend did not begin shipping high density modem cards based on K56Flex technology until the last thirty days. UUNET will deploy more than 200K new modems based on the K56Flex technology by the end of this year. This will increase their capacity by almost 300% ... all of which will be 56K enabled. PSiNet is taking a more incremental approach but will have support for K56Flex and X2 in certain major markets throughout North America. Again this will be complete by year end.

EarthLink wholesales IP services from these two organiations outside of Southern California. In Southern California EarthLink currently has a number of 56K modem racks based on X2 and K56Flex. We placed an order for 5K additional modems that will be deployed between now and year end. This will increase our capacity by 75% for our customer's in Southern California.

This expansion of modems, both with our partners and ourselves is the largest expansion of it's kind undertaken. Even more so than the touted upgrade to AOL's network earlier this year.

Although end user modems have been available for some time, these modems do not operate the same way when you consider the software needed to control high density rack devices on the back end. EarthLink continues to invest heavily in new technology and will offer its customer's the most robust high speed network in the industry.

Our Chief Technologist has indeed been busy on many fronts, this being on of them.
