The bill, which had bipartisan support in the Senate and was backed by Jay Leno and the SEMA organization, would have exempted classic cars older than 35 years from the state’s biennial smog checks. The Assembly Appropriations Committee’s decision effectively killed the bill, despite its appeal to classic car enthusiasts. The law was seen as a way to protect and celebrate California’s car culture..
