Keurig Partners with Covanta for K-Cup® Energy Recovery
Keurig is the manufacturer of the innovative single cup brewing system that lets people brew the perfect cup of gourmet coffee in less than a minute, without having to grind beans, measure coffee, handle filters or clean up. As part of it's process the plastic cups that hold the single serve contents are left behind for disposal.
Over the years, Keurig had been asked the following question by environmentally conscious consumers : "What can we do with our brewed K-Cup® packs?" Keurig answered that question by developing the " Grounds to Grow On" brewed K-Cup® pack recovery program which is currently available in 48 contiguous U.S. states. The program allows workplace customers, those using our Keurig machines in their office environment, to collect each brewed pack and return it to Keurig's disposal partner.

In 2010, Covanta partnered with Keurig to help reduce the amount of K-Cups® that were reaching landfills. Here's how it works:
   - Recovered K-Cup® packs are first sent to Keurig's waste disposal partner, where they are separated into two parts: the grounds & everything else
 - Grounds are turned into compost and the remaining components are sent to an Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility, owned by Covanta, where they are converted into energy

Our relationship with Keurig is another example of our Clean World Initiative at work in communities throughout the United States. Sustainability is our responsibility and our livelihood. By providing clean, sustainable waste management solutions, and in the process recovering clean, renewable electricity to power our homes and businesses, Covanta is fulfilling its mission of delivering tangible results from which everyone can benefit. At Keurig we've been asked the question: "What can we do with our brewed K-Cup® packs?" As an answer to this question, we've recently developed the "Grounds to Grow On" brewed K-Cup® pack recovery program. This program will allow our workplace customers, those using our Keurig machines in their office environment, to collect each brewed pack and return it to our disposal partner.
Once received at our disposal partner's, g2 revolution®, facility, the recovered K-Cup® pack is converted into useful alternatives, such as compost and energy. Specifically, the K-Cup® pack is processed through a proprietary method, including various grinding and separation operations that ultimately yield the coffee and tea grounds being separate from the other K-Cup® pack components. The grounds are sent out for composting to be used in a variety of agricultural applications, while the remaining K-Cup® pack grinds are provided to Covanta Energy and are used in an energy-from-waste process. All while reducing our landfill waste. [Global Energy's Alphakat plant?]
