OK, Jacob. I'm still a bit puzzled at what conclusion to draw from your determination that eating a burger is less risky than driving a car. After all, cars are recognized to be so potentially dangerous that there are universal licensing and insurance requirements as well as mandated safety info disclosure to control these risks. Are you suggesting that it is unnecessary or unwise as a public policy matter to take the kind of measures that are being contemplated, including testing of all slaughtered cows and forbidding meat processing of downer cows? And are you implying that there is no rational need for any American to change her beef consumption patterns, given the extremely low risk of contracting vCJD?

One toxicologist I spoke to told me that she now only buys ground beef from the local food coop where they buy their animals from local ranchers and grind the beef from steaks that the customer selects. I estimate that this ends up costing her about double what one pays for packaged ground beef at the local Costco.
