Shares of Dia Met Minerals Ltd. rose on rumours that it will soon
become a takeover target, hopes fueled yesterday after the chairman of
British resource giant Rio Tinto PLC told The Financial Times of
London he is ready to take a look at Canada's only diamond miner. Sir
Robert Wilson's comments sparked heavy trading in Kelowna,
B.C.-based Dia Met, which recently put itself up for sale after two of
its directors said they were ready to listen to offers for their combined
38-per-cent stake in the company. In an interview with The Financial
Times, Sir Wilson said he is ready to enter a data room containing key
information about Dia Met's 29-per-cent owned Ekati diamond mine in
the Northwest Territories. During the interview, he also said he sees
potential synergies between Ekati and a $1.3-billion diamond mine,
which Rio Tinto is planning to build at a nearby site with its
Toronto-based partner Aber Diamond Corp. More than 107,000 Dia
Met shares changed hands yesterday on the Toronto Stock Exchange,
about five times the diamond miner's typical daily volume.
