John, Svensmark's work on the effect of cosmic rays on climate is intriguing and worthy of consideration, IMHO. There are a number of important subtleties which really do matter and which are never mentioned in the one-paragraph blurbs. Until you become acquainted with the complete body of work, it is easy to dismiss it as crank science. I am moderately acquainted with the work and I think there is something to it, but I am not educated enough in the field to make a sound judgment of the relative strength of the "Svensmark Effect" vs that of greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere. For those with enough curiosity to follow up, I recommend this book. It is written for the lay person and is an easy read, but it contains all the essential info. amazon.com
