Is there an upward guidance in the wind?

AMD's PR has been hyperactive lately and quotes from it's executives have been unguardedly optimistic - even bombastic. It may be that 2004 results are already visible to them. Even so, they are being unusually positive.

I wonder if (i) they are about to guide upwards for 2Q or (ii) they know 2Q earnings are a blow-out?

I suspect it is (ii). It would be difficult to do (i) because they have not given numbers in their previous guidance. What phrase could they use that would not be misleading? For example if they said that flash and CPU revenues/earnings would not be down or flat but up on 1Q that would be too vague for shareholders and the market. However, as it is, they will be able to say after earnings that they provided the market with enough information and positive commentary to indicate that they would do better than previously guided i.e. they would be up on 1Q.
