longshort, as someone who has had nerve damage since being an adult, my guess is he tweaked his nerve somehow.

i'd need more details to to try and get an idea how it might have happened.

i use an anti-inflammatory diet and avoid exercises that over stress the nerve (specifically, pull ups - wish i could them very badly, but i can't, so i use the pullies in order to work my back with straight arms).

i also have really enjoyed training using something called German Volume Training - you burn the living crap out of your muscles and you don't need heavy weights to do it so you are less likely to blow something up.

this is a no joke workout (my friend benches 425 lbs 3 or 4 times and he doesn't like to this workout b/c it is so taxing) - i can't hang with the 5 day cycle because it literally depresses my immune system and i end up with low level illness symptoms. i do a 7 day cycle and add in a day of running. i also don't do the leg workouts because i mountain bike and i could not fit in GVT legs with a day fro mountain biking in the same week without completely blowing my legs up.

as for recovering, have him rest up. he can do legs and cardio while he's recovering. he won't want to aggravate the nerve impingement.

i also recommend taking high dose fish oil as an easy way to increase blood flow and facilitate healing.

this is the best deal for high quality fish oil i've found...
