But I did some telephone investigation today at chipsandmemory.com The spokesman there said he could get GHz Athlons in one day (they operate without much inventory) but that "GHz Intel chips are on indefinite hold." Those were his words. He had no clue when he might get another one, even though his web site lists them at $749. I had received the same story calling thechipmerchant.com yesterday and reported it on the "Mod" thread. (That guy said it would be 2 to 4 weeks before he got another GHz Intel chip and that he had a customer already waiting for two weeks.

Now I wish I had asked a salesman at Fry's if they had any of those HP Gigawonders actually in stock.

Petz,

Forget the 1G's...there are not enough around to make that big a difference in ASP's and revenues for either company. What we need to find out is what happens if there are 10 933 MHz Athlons and 10 933 MHz PIII's with the cost differential being about $100.

Is it a foregone conclusion that the average retail customer will automatically gravitate to the PIII? Do they ask for it or Intel by name? Do they ever ask for the Athlon? This is the stuff we need to be finding out now that the two companies are pretty competitive in price and speed grade quantities (except with the 1 G's). I think Scumbria's contention that all things being equal, the retail customer will pick Intel over AMD is correct....but maybe not.

I think I will check out a couple of stores in Seattle this weekend and get some salesmen's reaction.
