KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN INDUSTRIES filed a request for an IRS ruling that a
spinoff of its Financial Asset Management business will be tax free to both the company
and its shareholders. The Financial Asset Management business consists of KCSI's
ownership in Janus Capital Corp, Berger Associates Inc, and DST Systems. The
planned spin-off, which was first announced in early February, is expected to be
completed in the third quarter of this year. In early February, Kansas City Southern had
said the spinoff was expected to provide higher shareholder value than a public offering.
