when I fell in love with satellite internet, as a concept. My idea was to use it in a laptop, though, and the technology really isn't there yet, at least not for broadband.

With the current state of technology, you'd be hard pressed to get a signal into that laptop. Oval dishes of about 24"x36" are a necessary part of the mix. Not exactly portable. I know of no plans to increase the power of satellites to the point where an antenna with a PCMCIA form factor would suffice to receive the signal, let alone send one. Even the much hyped Globalstar data stream won't, TTBOMK, be made available to laptop users except through the G* handset. Other system proposals, such as Teledesic were never intended for mobile or portable applications, as far as I know.
