My own version if that is liberals, generally, subscribe to the notion that the role of the state is twofold here: (1) provide a safety net; and (2) cushion the exaggerated swings of the economy (via Fed actions and regulations)

I think that was my read prior to the last 12 months.

However, during the last year, I have a hard time thinking of any situation where the left has been willing to put any faith whatsoever in the market. Can you think of any comments by Krugman that have been even neutral about letting the market solve a particular problem? Whether it be health care, unemployment, trading, CEO salaries, or fat kids in America, the answer isnt just government regulation but rather a very deep involvement/dictation in people's decision making.

This isnt an indictment of Obama. He has left most of these issues alone. This is more a shift in my perception of just how many people in this country support policies that I previously would have thought would have been supported by a very small minority (I might have previously used the words "far left"). Basically guaranteeing unemployment at 6% is just one of these kinds of issues.
