Motorola wins contract to supply CDMA WiLL system in Yemen
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 1996--Yemen's Public Telecommunications Corporation (PTC) has awarded Motorola's International Cellular Infrastructure Group (ICIG) a contract to supply a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) Wireless Local Loop network in the Yemen city of Aden.
Motorola ICIG also announced today that it has been awarded a contract to supply a CDMA-based WiLL(R) network in Nigeria.
The Yemen WiLL system will be deployed in three phases, with the first phase scheduled to be operational by the end of the first quarter 1997. The network, when fully deployed, will provide service for subscribers in a number of cities in Yemen.
Motorola's ICIG will deliver the new Motorola CDMA Fixed Wireless Terminals and deploy its SC(TM) 2400 base station product which will operate in the 800 MHz frequency band.
"This contract marks Motorola's first CDMA WiLL deployment in the Middle East," said Pertti Johansson, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's ICIG. "The CDMA WiLL system will meet the growing needs of the private sector and business investors in the free zone area in Aden."
Motorola's WiLL system can be easily integrated into the landline network and deployed within two to four weeks of equipment delivery, much more quickly than traditional landline installations. WiLL also offers increased flexibility in system implementation and design since deployment does not require exact locations for subscriber coverage.
Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG) is the only infrastructure vendor that provides the three fastest growing digital technologies; CDMA, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) for cellular and Personal Communications Systems worldwide.
Motorola CIG launched the world's first commercial CDMA system in Hong Kong more than a year ago. It has since deployed commercial CDMA systems in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Diego, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Chicago and Milwaukee. Motorola CIG has won more than 50 contracts for CDMA commercial deployment and trials worldwide.
Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Motorola's 1995 sales were $27 billion.
