Schools Are Unconstitutionally Broke

The Washington State Supreme Court sustained a lower court's decision today that Washington State has been failing to adequately fund our K-12 school system.

Publicola has a great write up of the decision, and the effects it'll likely have on the upcoming legislative session.

Legislators are trying to piece together a $1.5 billion shortfall in the state budget.  Ideally being slapped down by Washington's highest court will prevent them from gutting any more from public education, but there's not many other places to cut.

The ruling gives legislators 6 more years to find a way to properly fund our schools.  A Washington state parent with a child entering kindergarten this year would find their child in middle school before they receive proper funding

Gregoire's half-cent sales tax increase could help, but would still be just a drop in the bucket.  We need revenue badly.  And kids gotta learn.
