Mary, it pains me to say this but I think Krugman is wrong. Obama tried taking the route of treating the American voters like thinking adults and the results were catastrophic. Health care took a popularity plunge into near leprosy status, Democratic candidates took it in the ear (that's being generous) and the message machine of the Republicans...fed by their Madison Avenue deep pocketed supporters...prevailed.

Krugman wants to take the high road and message the truth but his readership isn't the audience moving to the right. Those people aren't reading the Times and I think a few gimmicks are in order. This isn't, after all, a Democratic primary or an election year when a Bush/Cheney nightmare has become clear to the less informed among us. Why not neutralize the Republican message, or better yet, put the Republicans in the position of deriding their own talking points? Ed
