SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 1997 MAY 15 (NB) -- By David Frith, Computer Daily News.
A delighted 3Com [NASDAQ:COMS] has proclaimed itself cock of the walk in
the Australian switching marketplace, based on the latest figures from
market watcher IDC Australia. The statistics showed 3Com ahead in terms of
both revenues and number of ports shipped.

In switching revenues, it was the narrowest of victories, however. 3Com
claimed top spot with 28.6 percent of the action, a whisker ahead of Cisco
with 28.4 percent. Bay was third with 21.3 percent. Dollar amounts were not
revealed.

In terms of ports shipped, 3Com was comfortably ahead with 35.8 percent,
more than 12 percent ahead of Cisco. "These figures confirm what we have
known for some time, that 3Com is clearly the star performer at both ends
of the network spectrum," said MD John Halliwell.
