"Double checked the start menu. It has three programs, I have six icons in the bottom right hand corner plus Works that starts up on boot. What is the name of this area?"

Doug, what are the three programs in the startup folder? Do you know what they are? As far as I know, for a program to run on boot, it has to be in this startup folder.

(PS you might want to make sure you're looking at the StartUp folder, not just the Start Menu folder. Open your Start Menu folder, open the Programs folder, then there should be a folder called StartUp. Since you called it "Start Menu" maybe you haven't gone to the right place. Sorry if you have.)

It is possible for one program to open multiple icons. I remember a virus scan program I used to run would leave multiple icons.

The bar you're talking about is called the Taskbar, I believe. Don't know if the area you're talking about with the little icons is called something different or not.
