Wouldn't it be fair to assume that Nokia is, by far, one of the most efficient manufacturers of mobile phones? Remember there is a big difference in being an efficient manufacturer and saying a company is going to be one. One example that comes to mind is Dell and their JIT system. Many companies such as HP and CPQ said they will be implementing a JIT system but it never was as "efficient" as Dell's.
While Nokia may not have been able to "milk" the best deal out of Qualcomm, I find it hard to believe that Nokia gave up its patent portfolio for nothing. For example, did Nokia grant a royalty free license to Qualcomm in exchange for reduced royalty rates for infrastructure? Or, perhaps Qualcomm does, in fact, have to pay royalties to Nokia. I emailed Nokia's IR department and, unfortunately, the contact is away till the 9th.
One more point. Is Qualcomm going to get in trouble with the Justice department. Remember Microsoft and how they were charging CPQ and IBM different prices for their OS? That is one point to consider (however that point might be moot). |
