17 May 11:43

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--McLeodUSA Inc. (MCLD) said it may need roughly $900
million from April 1 through 2002 to fund capital expenditures, according to
its Form 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The capital expenditure requirements include the costs for expanding its
fiber optic communications network, including national and intra-city fiber
optic networks; adding voice and data switches; and constructing, acquiring,
developing or improving telecommunications assets in existing and new markets.

The company had capital expenditures of $3.6 billion in 2000.

McLeodUSA said in the filing Tuesday that it expects to meet the funding
needs through various sources, including existing cash balances, the existing
lines of credit, prospective sales of selected assets, exercises by employees
of outstanding stock options and cash flow from future operations.

McLeodUSA, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a telecommunications company.
