Hi Charles:

<< A: US West Interprise announced last week that 768 kbps would cost $175/mo.,which is less than that Chicago ISP is charging for ADSL.>>

Q.You are not saying that $175 a month is chip for a consumer, and if my memory serves me right this is a price for telecommuter, i.e. private line. For accessing the internet they will charge extra ?
Q.You are not saying that this high speed link is competitive with the today's cable modem access to the internet?
Q.You are not saying that 768 kbps is capable to provide same VOD services as ADSL ?
Q.You are not saying that USWEST offering allows a business to buy an HDSL modem at the bargain price and sign up for a service with USWEST.

<< A: Where is RADSL commercially available as a service offering as opposed to on a vendor's press release?>>

You got me here, however I was trying to compare 1-2 Mbps RADSL with equal speed HDSL, which you predicted is comming soon.

<< The question then becomes whether the DSL will be ADSL or HDSL. I am betting on HDSL as the early winner in actual deployments (vs. press releases). >>

HDSL is a winner right now, but how distant future are you talking about, 1/2 year, 1 year, 5 years?

I think that eventualy ADSL concept is not unreasonable and will come out on top. But for it to become a reality, the network backbone has to be converted to the assymetrical architecture. The first step in this conversion might be a proxy video server, placed at CO site. Within 2 to 5 years local Bells could do this to generate additional business and competing directly with Blockbuster VCR tapes renting businesses. And HDSL modem will not be able to support this, but ADSL or cable modem will.
