Sales were weakest in 5 years, and specialty stores were down. I've noticed since Sep 11 that Tysons and other malls had store closings, probably about 10 stores in Tysons Corner alone. Usually, the failing stores will close immediately after Xmas. The Telecheck survey is somewhat misleading as it focuses only on same store sales. I would also gather that people who shop by check predominantly shop at the discount stores, such as WalMarts, Costco, and other stores that they frequent regularly.
