If credit card companies dealt strictly in a straightforward manner with customers, what you say would be entirely true. However, advertising employs considerable resources to take advantage of proven methods of psychological manipulation in order to boost revenues. This is not innocent. But I guess saying the CC companies are blameless for those unsophisticates who fall prey to those methods is like saying "guns don't kill people, credit cards do."
