A number of smaller biotech firms have been doing well recently. One I've followed for years and which was in the headlines last week is Compumed (CMPD). The company makes bone and joint scanning systems for the visualization of osteoporosis and arthritis. Earlier this week the company announced a prototype of its latest model would be on display a national conference this week/weekend (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/97/09/09/cmpd_cpmd_1.html).

The company's stock, which had been severely impacted by an unfavorable licensing agreement with Merck for an earlier model (which does not apply to the latest system), was up ~100% for the week on huge volume.

I've been unable to find any follow-up stories nor learn of third party opinions of the new device. However, if this new system simply performs the osteoporosis side of its claims, and with the company sure to insist on more palatable licensing/distribution arrangements, demographics would argue this small one may have a bright future.

Best wishes,
Peter
