Digital Persona is upgrading its U are U product (from today's InformationWeek):
" . . . The upgrade, U.are.U Professional, will add a plug-and-play Universal Serial Bus driver for Windows NT users. Its software is also being redesigned to let IT managers have a single point of logon administration for fingerprint ID, passwords, smart cards, and other countersigns.
"Customers told Digital Persona they didn't want a closed system that managed only fingerprints, says corporate marketing VP Nancy Van Natta. 'They needed a system that handled all kinds of user authentication.' . . .
"[The] U.are.U Professional [will] store fingerprint algorithms on the server, eliminating the need for users to register their prints on each system.
"U.are.U Professional, which is due out in September, will cost $150."
==================
In other words, U are U needed a network version to be competitive with Identicator. Note the price; at $150 it is still much higher than the Compaq peripheral and will be a lot more expensive than the next generation IDT device, which will easily match the U are U software. |
