In all fairness to Gateway 2000, I got right through to their tech.
support on Saturday and quickly discovered the reason why my
hard drive was making noises, the system freezing up, and my
CD-ROM was disabled completely....I had an "NYB" virus.

I downloaded Dr. Soloman and it correctly diagnosed the virus
right away, but didn't seem to be able to point to where it was and
it wasn't readily apparent how to fix the problem.

This was the demo version, it looked sort of primitive, and wasn't
very functional, IMO. Did I get the wrong impression? Is this the
product that Cybermedia is using? I went to a software retailer in
town and they had McAfee, Norton, and a "brown bag" product,
but no Dr. Soloman (even though Dr. Soloman claims to be #1).

I downloaded McAfee (a much larger file) demo version and it was
very straightforward and logical with a nice presentation. I quicky
located the virus and cleaned it up.

At this point, I'd definitely consider McAfee's "user assistance/
help desk product", since their anti-virus product seems to do the
job quickly and effectively for a "non-techie" person like myself.

Any other experiences with these products or other competitor
products?
