Biodegradable Plastics Developed in Shaanxi

XI'AN (Feb. 13) XINHUA - The Yangling Agricultural High- tech
Zone in northwestern Shaanxi Province has developed a kind of
biodegradable plastic sheeting, which is environmentally friendly.

The technology involved in making the product has passed technical
appraisals by the China National Packaging Corp. under the auspices of
the State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.

The research group led by Prof. Li Anhua has turned out a dozen plastic
products including dinner sets and ground-covering plastic sheeting,
all made of biodegradable starch.

Repeated experiments conducted over the past five years have shown that
the starch-made products can be decomposed into water and carbon
dioxide in a matter of 70-90 days. The cost for making such
biodegradable plastic products is roughly the same as that in making
traditional plastic goods.

"Biodegradable products made with the new technology are expected to
replace traditional plastic wears, thus opening up a new way to do away
with 'white pollution'," said Prof. Li Zhenqi, an academician with the
Chinese Academy of Sciences.

At present, an estimated 11 million tons of plastic garbage were
disposed of in China annually and the figure in the world as a whole
reached 170 million tons every year.

Ground plastic sheeting is used extensively on about 30 percent of
China's arable land, and, if a hectare of arable land is left with 500
kg of plastic wastes, soil fertility will be lost completely, as
indicated by a recent agricultural survey.
