Miraje, I drive a plug-in hybrid, specifically a Toyota Pious Prime.

On a full charge, I can drive about 25 miles before the global warming engine kicks in, but that's good enough for my usual work commute.

Here's the funny thing. I calculate that a full charge amounts to just over half a tank of gas. Electric rates are somewhere between 19 and 25 cents per kWh. Third-party charging stations like ChargePoint charges 25 cents per kWh.

Given that my battery consumes 6 kWh of energy before it switches into global warming mode, I'm paying $1.50 for the equivalent of a half gallon of gas, or $3 per gallon.

If gas prices ever go lower than $3/gallon here in California, it'd be more economical for me to drive in global warming mode.

Hence it's in California's best interest to keep gas prices well above $4/gallon. And that's easily achievable via taxes, regulations, prohibitions on new gas stations, that "special blend" of gas that only a few refineries can make, etc.
