Yes, this is just the continuation of the trend in computing -- symplification of the hardware for the sake of performance/cost while emphasizing the software/control systems.

It's really goofy to add CPUs to server PCs in an attempt to drive performence when each added CPU brings in less than 66% of the previous one in performance terms. Much more productive(though for now more difficult) to just add PCs to the server.

That's what blade is about. Just part of the trend.
