Palm May Contract Some Organizer Production to Taiwan, CT Says

Taipei, Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc., the world's No. 1 maker of electronic organizers, is planning to outsource some production to Taiwan subcontractors, the Commercial Times reported, citing unidentified officials at Taiwan companies.

A subsidiary of Inventec Co., a notebook computer maker, is seen as the most likely company to win the contract, which may be signed in the next few days for an Inventec Group company to begin production at a Shanghai plant in the fourth quarter, the paper said.

Personal and notebook computer maker Acer Inc. is also talking with Palm, though its discussions concern licensing the Palm operating system rather than a manufacturing contract, the paper reported.

Palm earlier this month said it would unveil a range of new models and design revisions in competition with rival Handspring Inc.
