Lehman likely to write-down $4 bln: J.P. Morgan

>>>Hmmm. We didn't get our bank failure last Friday, but we did get our weekly $5 billion wirtedown as a substitute. Forget who coughed it up. One wouldn't suppose that as a bonus, Lehman this week will provide the failure and the writedown?? Nah. Too much to ask.<<<

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- J.P. Morgan said in a research note released Monday that Lehman Brothers is likely to write down about $4 billion in the third quarter but unlikely to sell the asset-management unit Neuberger Berman. J.P. Morgan, which cut its earnings estimates and maintained a neutral rating on the bank, said Lehman's write-down comes as residential and commercial-related indices deteriorate. "We believe the management wants to leave its mortgage troubles behind and restore confidence, which it can best accomplish by reducing its higher-risk credit exposure." As for a possible Neuberger sale, J.P Morgan said it did not think investors and rating agencies would welcome a divestiture, which brings a steady cash flow, diversification and a lower compensation ratio. Meanwhile, reports intensified Tuesday that the New York investment bank is busy hawking Neuberger to private equity players.
