Roy, I have no idea why big companies would bleed red in this tough, tough business. In fact, I expect a few of them to capitulate. But, if you are smart and don't waste your money on see-through fabs in Utah or on Burst EDO, you make enough in the upcycle to more than pay for the pain of the downcycle. And you make more in the upcycle if you have the capacity in place when it starts. So, over an entire cycle, it is a pretty good business. The Taiwanese have been careful to go into business with people like TXN and Toshiba who know how to make chips very effectively. Also, with their huge boxmaking and consumer electronics capacity on Taiwan, they will have a ready-made market. For example, I think the Texas Instruments/Acer/United Microelectronics fabs will do fairly good business with TXN laptop computers and Acer desktops. MB
