Intel has to protect its IP, and has to protect the right to charge for that IP in the future.

Given how tangled up in Rambus Intel's P4 "strategy" has been, right from the start, I can't help but find that particular current mantra ironic. Live by the patent sword, die by the patent sword just might be the outcome Intel ends up looking at here. There may end up being a lot of road kill semi companies around, who could claim patent violations and have no need for cross-licensing. Who can say?
