I did the math in a previous post the other day. 1 or 2 billion bushels really sounds like a lot, but when you convert it to ethanol and compare it to gasoline consumption, it's nothing, not even 3% of consumption. That's also before taking out all the energy to convert it to ethanol. The conversion process is very energy intensive.

The US consumes about 148 billion gallons of gasoline a year so, again, 2 billion bushels of corn is nothing by comparison.

Let's talk about this again when the annual corn surplus is 50 billion bushels. Then corn ethanol becomes a realistic contributor to solving the problem. Unfortunately getting there will at least triple natural gas prices and deplete the nations groundwater levels to the point where the general population will revolt.
