LB,

Another reason I wanted you elsewhere is your posting of the above "Urban Legend." Your summary is from a bogus Email that has been circulating for years on the Web. You should check your facts before posting nonsense like this. Here ARE the facts, so that it will be more difficult for you to mislead others. Wikipedia has a good section on this oil: en.wikipedia.org. Here is another direct refutation.

More of a straw man than a refutation. It refutes claims I never made in my post.

And, BTW, it wasn't some urban legend e-mail that turned me from being positive about Canola Oil to being slightly negative. About a year ago, I read a book called Good fat Cookbook:

amazon.com

Still, if you asked me to pick an inexpensive supermarket oil (other than olive oil), I would pick Canola oil, because all of the alternatives are worse. But I would not go as far as replacing butter with Canola oil.

As far as I am concerned, if the taste of food is either enhanced (or at least not harmed) by flavor of olive oil, butter or coconut oil, I use that, but if the oil really needs to be tasteless (I mean not be adding its own taste to the food), canola is probably the best one to use. Another choice that is supposedly good is ghee (butter oil separated separated from milk components), but I have never bothered to either look for it in supermarket or make it myself...
