Wind River Systems Offers Developer's Kit For Adding New Back End Connection Strategies To Tornado
New Kit Enables BDM and ICE Vendors to Provide Seamless Tornado Support
with Minimal Effort
ALAMEDA, Calif., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind River Systems (Nasdaq: WIND) today announced the availability of a Back End Developer's Kit for adding new connection strategies to the award-winning Tornado(TM) cross-development environment. This new kit will enable Background Debug Mode (BDM), In-Circuit Emulator (ICE) and other hardware tool vendors or customers to provide back end Tornado integrations with minimal effort.
Introduced in the fall of 1995, Wind River's Tornado is the first open and extensible environment for developing real-time and embedded applications. Its plug and play framework is made possible through the use of the Tool Command scripting Language (Tcl) and the publication of all the Tornado Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). These features facilitate easy third-party tool integration, greater customization of the user interface, development of application-specific tools, and additional connection strategies.
To further simplify the process of adding new connection strategies to Tornado, Wind River is now offering a Back End Developer's Kit. Using this kit, hardware vendors who already have a complete C API can integrate their hardware through Tornado's target server in a matter of weeks (line drawing available).
"Since its introduction, we have had over 60 companies commit to providing support for Tornado," said David Larrimore, vice president of marketing for Wind River Systems. "By offering the Back End Developer's Kit in addition to the published APIs and use of Tcl, we can help the hardware tool partners bring their tools to market faster and provide customers with seamless integrated solutions for developing embedded applications quickly and with minimal risk."
Back End Developer's Kit
Wind River's Back End Developer's Kit consists of a C++ class library with extensive documentation and examples to help hardware vendors create a back end connection strategy that takes the form of a dynamically linked library. The framework for the back end is in the form of an abstract base class to enable developers to reuse proven, debugged code. The documentation guides the developer through the development process, answering such questions as: "What back end methods must be implemented?" "How should they be implemented?" "How can you use wtxtcl to test a back end?" and so on.
Tornado Development Environment
Tornado provides the embedded developer a new interactive cross-development environment comprised of coordinated tools that incur little or no overhead in target resources. This next-generation development environment consists of three integrated components: the Tornado tool suite, a set of powerful tools and utilities on both the host and the target; VxWorks(R), the industry's most powerful and scalable real-time operating system, which executes on the embedded target processor; and a full range of communications options such as Ethernet, serial line, ICE or ROM emulator for the target connection to the host. Completely open and extensible, Tornado also facilitates the use of third-party and custom tools. From low-end, deeply-embedded communications and office automation products to high-end VME applications such as real-time industrial automation and traffic control systems, Tornado enables developers to get high-quality products to market faster.
Availability
Wind River's Back End Developer's Kit is now available free of charge. For more information on the kit, the award-winning Tornado development environment or other Wind River products please call 1-800-545-WIND or your local Wind River sales representative or point your WWW browser to wrs.com.
