In the Chicago suburbs, finding a parking space at one of the Regional Malls is back to being difficult, vehicle traffic seems to be close to normal.

Inside, though, the stores seem less crowded, and there are few or no waits in the checkout lines or at restaurants (relative to pre 9/11).

But things seem to be rapidly approaching normal.

A friend in New York who's business wholesales wine to restaurants says sales are down an incredible 75%, as fewer people are eating out, and those who do aren't buying expensive wines with dinner. He's had to start laying off staff to stay solvent - something he'd been resisting (perhaps for too long).

As the daily barrage of funerals winds down, hopefully New Yorkers will begin to look forward again, and move away from the sadness of the recent past.

A tragic time for one of history's great cities.
