court tomorrow:

A man accused of killing six deer hunters and wounding two others after a confrontation over trespassing returns to court Wednesday, and the state's top prosecutor, Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, takes over the case.

An attorney for Chai Soua Vang, 36, of St. Paul, Minn., said no decision was reached Tuesday on whether to waive Wednesday's preliminary hearing and have Vang immediately enter pleas to six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

"It either is going to proceed with witnesses or it will be waived. That is all I can tell you. We always must consult with our client," attorney Jonathan Smith of Milwaukee said.

At a preliminary hearing, prosecutors present evidence through witnesses to persuade a judge that a crime was committed and a trial is warranted.

Wednesday's hearing will be Vang's second appearance in Sawyer County Circuit Court since the Nov. 21 shootings in some isolated woods on the second day of Wisconsin's gun deer hunt.
